With poker’s rapid growth in popularity, it is becoming increasing important for a person to be knowledgeable about understanding the gaming and at least comprehend the basics of how to play. In many social situations a person may be asked to play the game or be present while the game is being played. Thus, being knowledgeable will help to increase the comfortability and enjoyment of the game. In addition, it may help to avoid awkward situations where a person is the only one playing because they are not familiar enough with how to play.
Just the Basics
Basically speaking, poker is a card game in which players attempt to win a pot by either convincing all other players to give up their hand or by having the best hand after all betting has been completed. There are countless variations of specific poker games, but the general principles are constant throughout most of these variations. One principle is that the dealing will rotate clockwise around the table. The person distributing the cards (the dealer) usually has a small plastic puck in front of him which is commonly called the button. In casinos the house provides a dealer that does not play, but simply distributes the cards to the players. The button is moved from player to player as if they were dealing and to keep track of the order in which players must act.
In nearly all variations, players must post a forced bet, called blinds or antes, before the cards have been dealt. These bets promote the action and create the basis of the pot that is to be vied for. After the initial bets are posted, the starting hands are dealt and a round of betting is completed. What comes next depends on which game is being played, but generally there will be an increase of available cards and more rounds of betting. If a player bets during one of these rounds, all of the other players must decide to call the bet, raise, or fold their cards.
If everyone folds, the hand is over and the pot is awarded to the player making the bet. Because the winning player is not required to show his hand in this situation, it is possible to bluff, which is making bets while not having a winning hand. If all betting rounds have been completed and there is still more than one person with cards, then the remaining hands must be shown and the highest of these hands is awarded the pot.
Types of Games
The three types of online poker games that have enjoyed the highest popularity are stud-based games, community card games, and draw-based games. Within these types, many specific variants can be found. In a draw-based game, players receive a starting hand and then may opt to replace the cards within that hand to create a higher holding. In the stud-based games, players receive an individual combination of face up and face down cards. In games that use community boards, such as Texas Hold ‘Em, a unique starting hand is dealt to each player and then a number of cards are displayed face up that can be used by all players.
